Giving, not taking—that should be our mentality in this modern era. “Giving mentality” will bring meaning to the freedom we have, but “taking mentality” will abuse it. We all should give something to the community to practice our freedom.

August 2010. Friday the 13^th. Putera Sampoerna Foundation held an event at Kopi Merah to raise fund for their charity program called “Save a Teen”. To make it short, their mission is to bring kids back to school and educate them to be smart people—assets for this country we love.

Sonicflux had a chance to perform in that event. So, we played our materials for our first mini-album which will contain five songs: Before It’s Over, Give Me a Chance, No More, Power Up, Lost.

It was a great night. Some people donated, some were blown away by our music .. One other band called “Small Circle” gave a catchy performance right after ours.

This is something we can give to the community, to our country. We hope we can do more in the future. To practice independence—Indonesia’s independence.

As you all know, we are recording materials for our first mini-album at the moment. And this song “Before It’s Over” is undoubtedly one of the best songs we have so far.

Written by Boby, this is a really-feel-good upbeat song. The drums, bass, guitar, vocal, and everything just sound so groovy.

Last Thursday, we had a gig with Endah n’ Rhesa, Adhitia Sofyan, and Masmo Notturno. It was a discussion about “Music and Social Media” moderated by Adib Hidayat from RollingStone magazine and Ndoro Kakung.

Here, I would quote some interesting words from the event.

“Social media is the easiest and cheapest media to market your music.” – Adib Hidayat

“We have sold 17,000 copies of our first album and social media took significant part.” – Endah n’ Rhesa

“My first album was downloaded by 3000 people in the first two days.” – Adhitia Sofyan

…and we all jammed to end that perfect night.

Originality. Not corrupted by pop industry. That’s what he believed in.

He built a strong fan base. Traveling around playing his music. It’s just a matter of time for his music to be a hit.

It happened. He picked the label who wanted to cooperate with him and his band, not the other way around.

I remember when I was sitting on the sidewalk with Boby and drinking cold beer like never before. No crowd, no sound, no nothing. Just an empty street. Well, it was 1 A.M.

We conversed about some things – boys’ talk with no meaning – but ended up talking about something that matters until now. It was the beginning of Sonicflux.

Have you heard punkers’ famous statement: DIY? Do it yourself. It’s the root of all independent movements you’ve ever seen.

We’re always independent. Owned by nobody. That sums up everything.
